A Haunting at Hensley Hall

With Halloween just around the corner, ghost stories make fantastic reads, and A Haunting at Hensley Hall is exactly the kind of ghost story that fits the holiday.

[easyazon-image-link asin="B005CKI3LQ" alt="A Haunting at Hensley Hall (A Ravynne Sisters Paranormal Mystery)" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ryJ-bbilL.jpg" align="left" width="307" height="500"]The story is set in an old mansion that two sisters win in an unusual contest held by a small town…the previous owners committed suicide, or so it seems, and there were no heirs, so the mansion is essentially “raffled off” to pay the back taxes that have accumulated on the property.

Of course, the mansion has a dark history, and is in a serious state of disrepair, but conveniently the sisters have the money to begin fixing it up to become a bed and breakfast. Along the way, the sisters begin to discover not only the ghosts, but the reasons for their presence, and the mystery deepens…

Mix in the forty year old disappearances of one of the previous occupants, and several of her teen aged friends…and you’ve got enough suspense in parts of the book to keep you reading well into the night!

If you’re a fan of semi-gothic, lighter horror stories, you’ll find yourself drawn into Hensley Hall along with Charlie, Meg, and the curious cast of characters they meet along the way, just as I was.

Even better, A Haunting at Hensley Hall is available in the Kindle store for just $.99, and I have to say, it’s money well spent!

Kindle Samples

How many times have you bought a book that looked or sounded good, only to find that you had to “wade” through the book because you didn’t like the author’s style of writing, or because the storyline was not the way that it sounded on the cover?  Or even because you just didn’t like the pace or tone of the story?

One of the best things that comes with your Amazon Kindle and the access to the Kindle store is the ability to download samples of nearly all the books!  I don’t know if you’re like me, but when I find a new author, or hear about a new book, that intrigues me, I like to actually look at the book before I buy it.  With my Kindle, I can not only look inside the book, but I can also download the first chapter or two and actually read a portion of the book before I buy it.

For me, this especially works well when I find a new author that I am interested in reading, but I’m just not sure yet that I will like the author’s writing style, or even the storyline itself.  If I do, then I buy the book, if not…then I haven’t wasted my money!

After all, it’s true that you can’t judge a book by what’s written on the cover!

Visit the Kindle store now to see how you can sample ALL your books before you buy ‘em.

The Kindle Store

Mandy asks…

When buying from the Kindle Store, how do you pay for books?

Do you need to give credit/debit card details or something like that? I am thinking of buying a kindle and am based in the UK. Would this be any different for me? Would there be a problem when purchasing from the UK? Also, if I take my kindle abroad, would it still be possible to buy books from the kindle store?

kindle store

admin answers:

It sets up through your credit/debit card or you can apply a giftcard balance if you’d rather say budget out for the month or something.

There *are* limitations on what books you can buy from the UK because of copywrite laws, so make sure you browse to see if the books you want are available as a UK user.

Yes, you could take your kindle aboard and still buy and download books.

Richard asks…

Does the Kindle Store have harry potter books?

I have a kindle and want to re-read the harry potter series but it’s no where on the kindle store.

kindle store

admin answers:

I looked it up on Amazon.com and no they don’t have Harry Potter in Kindle formant. It has something to do with J.K rowling now wanting too or her publishing comapny deciding against it. Sometimes the author has no right to some of the things.

Chris asks…

Charles asks…

Is there a way to get books that aren’t on the Kindle Store on my kindle?

Is it only kindle store or could you somehow get other books?

kindle store

admin answers:

You should be able to download other formats — at least ones that aren’t DRM locked. It’ll take HTML and Mobi for sure. I’m not certain about PDFs or some of the other formats, though.

For instance, if you wanted to download some of the free classics at Project Gutenberg, they’re in enough formats that one should be Kindle-friendly.

Amazon Kindle Presents The News!

This just in from CNN:

(CNN) — Newspaper publishers no doubt long for the days of black-and-white packages on most doorsteps and corporate earnings “in the black,” as they say.

On Monday, Amazon.com — a new king of black and white with its market-leading Kindle e-reader — presented them with a chance to earn more profits in the digital world.

Starting December 1, Amazon will give newspapers a 70 percent cut of revenue from digital versions of their editions sold in the site’s Kindle Store. That’s in line with what Apple and Google give developers selling apps in their digital markets….”

How Much Does It Cost to Download a Book?

Amazon KindleIf you buy an eReader for yourself, or as a gift for someone else, how much does it cost to download each book?

Typically, when you buy a print book in a store, the cover price is anywhere from $7.99 for a paperback to 27.00 or more for a newly-released hardback book.  Bestsellers can cost even more.  However, since the “book” that you buy with your eReader is in digital format, prices usually range from $9.99 to $14.99 for newly released books and bestsellers, and even less for what would be a paperback book in stores.

Even better, there are literally hundreds of thousands of FREE books available for download!  That’s right.  There are books that are absolutely free.

Currently each of the major eReader sellers have their own online “bookstores,” like Amazon’s Kindle Store, that cater to the particular models of digital readers available in their stores, however, since there are eReader “apps” for your computer, your phone, and your other electronics, you can easily download a free app, and access some merchants online eBookstores without the reader.  And, your eReader app will remember your place regardless of where you’re reading your book!

Currently Amazon is the leader in eReader portability, with it’s Kindle app available for download for free for most electronic devices, including most cell phones, desktop computers, laptops, etc.  However, with the release of the Nook color edition, look for apps to make the Nook more portable!

Kindle or iPad?

E-book advantages on the Kindle and the iPad

By The Associated Press (AP)

If you’re choosing between a Kindle or an iPad for reading electronic books, you might keep in mind some advantages of both products.

Kindle:

_ Lower price. ($259)

_ Light weight. (10.2 ounces. The iPad is 1.5 pounds.)

_ Can wirelessly download books any time, anywhere from Amazon’s Kindle Store without a monthly fee. The $499, entry-level iPad goes online only in Wi-Fi hot spots. Wireless connectivity anywhere requires an iPad that is $629 and up, plus a monthly service fee.

_ Gray-scale “e-ink” screen that can be read in direct sunlight.

_ Battery lasts up to a week with wireless connection on, or two weeks with it off.

iPad:

_ LCD color touch screen is 9.7 inches diagonally, compared with 6 inches on the Kindle. That can give a more complete Web-surfing experience.

_ It also functions as an iPod and video player.

_ It can download music and videos from Apple’s iTunes Store and games and applications from its App Store — including e-reading apps from Apple and other companies, such as Amazon.
