Other Uses for Kindle Fire

With this past weekend being the Thanksgiving holiday, our entire family got together… of course, we ate tons of food, we visited with each other as many of us hadn’t seen each other in months, and we played games, watched television, and much more.

But, the biggest ‘hit” of the weekend was, without a doubt, my Kindle Fire.  While I’m not the first in the family to get a tablet computer, I was the first to get the Fire, and literally everyone wanted to see it, and try it out.

Kindle Fire, Full Color 7My mother, who is addicted to casino style computer games, spent literally hours playing on several different slot machine apps that I downloaded for her.

My father, who loves to read and plays music, enjoyed the piano player app, and tried out the reading part of the Kindle Fire.

My nephew and his fiance, who are college students, tried out the display and reader to see if they could save money on their college textbooks… (they could)

My brother in law, who is an IT guy and has both a Kindle and an iPad, tried it out to see how well it compared, pricewise and feature wise.  It held up to his expectations!

My nieces, one 11 and one 17, both tried out the games (bejeweled was a favorite), and the streaming music and video…now, of course, both of them have added it to their list for Santa.  Even Santa himself liked the Kindle Fire when he arrived ;)

Overall, the Kindle Fire was a huge hit over the holiday… the only downside…  I never got to use it!  Someone else ALWAYS had my Kindle Fire.  I predict that there will be a lot of Kindle Fire tablets under our family Christmas tree this year…

Best eReaders for Comic Books & Novels

Betty asks…

Best ereader for comic books?

I know there are a ton of different e-readers out now that can do tons of different things. In all honesty I just want a color screen that I can read my digital comic books on. ipads and some of the other tablet pc’s are nice but downloading apps and other internet related content isn’t a big deal to me. Any help would be appreciated

admin answers:

Part of that is going to depend on where you buy the digital comic books. NookColor is pretty impressive but only if the books are available in a supported format either with no DRM or a DRM scheme that is supported by the device. Velocity Micro Cruz is less expensive than NookColor and it’s nice for use as a reader. Like NookColor, it’s linked to a particular store via wi-fi but you can copy to it from the computer, and both are obviously somewhat lacking in terms of being fully-function tablets but then they don’t cost what the iPad costs. Neither has 3G, by the way. There’s also the Pandigital Novel but I’ve played with the in-store demos and I don’t think it’s worthwhile compared to Cruz and NookColor. There is talk of color e-ink finally coming during the early part of 2011, just so you know.

George asks…

What is the best Ereader for reading ebooks? Nook? Kindle? Ipad?

admin answers:

Hi, Jake S, Nook from Barnes & Noble is the best combination of price and features of the eReaders market. When choosing an eReader, you need to consider not only the physical properties of the device, but also compare eBook stores behind it. Sony has never been a contender for any comparison by anyone as they only have like 5 books in their Ebook store and their devices are way overpriced for what they offer. Borders is behind Kobo/Cruz devices in US and as you might of heard, Borders is on a brink of bankruptcy. Kindle and Nook are the only devices to be considered as their eBook stores have over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available.
Having that out of the way, you should then decide which screen you want: e-Ink or LCD. It depends on what you’re reading. If just black & white novels then the better one would be Amazon Kindle
or e-Ink Nook from Barnes & Noble. If you read electronic magazines or college text books with a lot of color graphs and charts or children’s’ books with a lot of pictures then the better would be Nook Color LCD from Barnes & Noble. Then, you should understand the limitations of e-Ink eReaders – they are limited to be black & white for now they “blink” at each ebook’s page turn, they’re not too good for web browsing, they need external light source for reading when dark, and they cannot handle videos.
Whichever device you choose, here’s the advantages of the Nook’s (both e-Ink black & white and Nook Color) over Kindle:
- Any Barnes & Noble store provides free Wi-Fi to Nook’s
- Nook allows to lend Nook books for two weeks to friends and family or share with your other devices that run B&N app (PC, MAC, Android phones, Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad, etc.) Barnes & Noble allows (when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store) to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for renting text-ebooks.
Nook Color is worth mentioning separately as this is a hybrid Android eReader/tablet device, something between Kindle and iPad. Even though Nook Color has LCD touchscreen, it’s a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight and produces less glare all of which are dooming reading on iPad. Also, the screen is amazing and readable/viewable at wide angles.
Overall, Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It’s a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn’t have a camera. If all you want is to read novels, the original e-Ink Nook might be better for you. If you want something more from your device (color graphs and charts of college text books, childrens books, photos and videos, web sites in full color) at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet.
Nook Color has several apps that already come with the device (Pandora Internet radio, QuickOffice, etc.) Also, Barnes & Noble recently released Nook SDK and Nook Developer platform that will allow most of the existing 100,000 Android apps be ported to it. Also, you can use the Social Settings screen to link your NOOK Color to your Facebook account and your Twitter account. You can also import all your contacts from your Google Gmail account. Once you have linked to Facebook and Twitter and set up email contacts, you can lend and borrow books, recommend books, and share favorite quotes with your friends.

Carol asks…

What is the best ereader? The Nook, Kindle?

admin answers:

In short:

> Don’t go for Nook Color. It’s using backlight screen like computer screen, and is difficult to our eyes. Just not suitable for reading purpose.

> Choose the Nook if you want to be:
- Able to borrow ebooks from library to your ebook reader
- Able to read books in epub format (without need of conversion) on your ebook reader

> Choose the Amazon Kindle
if you want to be:
- Able to have free 3G wireless access
- Able to download books and use 3G wireless even you’re outside of the United States
- Able to have text-to-speech function to read books to you like audio books

There is also quite a good review for comparison between the two here:

Michael asks…

what is the best ereader for kids?

admin answers:

Hi Shannon Stephenson,
get the V.Reader Animated E-Book System
* 4.3″ color touch screen
* Plays fully animated stories with story narration, character voices, vivid graphics and exciting music and sounds
* Includes 3 ways to play: Watch the story, reading games and story dictionary
* USB port and SD memory card slot for expansion
* Durable, kid-tough design

James asks…

Whats the best ereader out there?

admin answers:

In short, I won’t choose iPad or Nook Color, because they’re using backlight screen like computer screen, and is difficult to our eyes. Just not suitable for reading purpose. For other ebook readers including the B&N Nook, Sony Reader, and Amazon Kindle, I’ll go for the Kindle. For the Sony Reader, many books (especially new releases) cannot be easily find on it. For the Nook, it is good but it is slower and less user friendly compared to the new version of Amazon Kindle
.

Transferring & Buying eBooks

Betty asks…

Can my brother’s free Augen The Book eReader books be transferred to my Kindle?

I was wondering–my brother has the Augen The Book eReader which comes with free books. He downloaded them to our computer into a file, so all of the free books are stored. Now, I have a Kindle and want those books. Can the stored books be transferred to my Kindle? If yes, how?

ebooks

admin answers:

Those free books, are they older classic type books, like Pride and Prejudice, Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Jules Verne, etc.?

If so, you can get those for free from Amazon for your Kindle.

However, if they are titles not offered for free by Amazon, you might want to try a free program called Calibre. It can convert other eBook and document formats, into a Kindle compatible format. Then you just download them to the Kindle using a USB cable.

Thomas asks…

Are there any websites where I can download my Ereader books?

I’m going on a trip tomorrow and I need a book to read on the plane.  I just got an eReader for Christmas, but when I try to put my credit card number in it doesnt work because I have a new style credit card.  So I was wondering if there were any other websites where I could download books?:)

What WebSites Can I Get Free Young Adult Books For eReaders?

I want to add more books onto my eReader on my iPod touch, what website can i get them free?  There is a website that has free ebooks, its called manybooks.net (its just not my choice of books) , so yes they do put it on the internet, and please do not comment if your not going to give me an answer.

manybooks.net doesn’t deal with copyrighted material. You must know something about publishing if you’re going to steal it.

Can I transfer my printed books to an eReader?

Im planning to buy an eReader( either Nook or Kindle), I own some books but they are not ebooks.  I just wanted to know if i can somehow transfer those books I own to my eReader so I wont have to re-purchase them… Thanks in advance!

admin answers:

You have some limited options.  You can use a scanner to scan some pages of your book and then transfer the images into your ereader. If you want the complete book, then you will have to purchase the ebook version.  There are some websites that provide you free and downloadable versions of your books, but don’t be overly optimistic that you will find your books.  Try one of these sites:

Joseph asks…

Why are some books in the eReader store Unavailable?

Hi. I got an ereader for my birthday and I bought 2 books. I have two other books I would like to buy, but when I search them under the pricing it says that these books are unavailable. Both of these books are in Indigo and have been published a couple months back. I don’t have a Kobo but have the Sony Reader. I have tried finding the answer but I can’t seem to find it. If you have any info about this it would greatly help! Thanks!

ebooks

admin answers:

Your question is a little confusing.  Where are you searching for these books? If you can’t find them in the Sony Reader Store, you can request that they stock them or you can buy somewhere else. If you are using the Borders store, I have no idea–downloading from that site is a nightmare and there is no rhyme or reason for why unavailable items are listed. You can try purchasing the book through the publisher’s website, or the author may have a link to a bookstore selling the books you want. Just remember to only purchase/download in a format your Reader can work with (I have had success with epub, BBeB, PDF and Adobe Acrobat)

Where are you located? (US, Canada or somewhere else) Because of licensing, some books are available in certain countries only. Also, I believe the Sony Reader Store only functions for the US and Canada. If you are in another country you will have to use an independent ebookstore.

What books are you looking for? If I knew the titles/author, I would be able to find an online bookstore for you if they are available at all.

Linda asks…

Should I get an eReader?

I LOVE books:) and at first I thought I wouldn’t like an eReader because I like to feel the book in my hands and see it on paper.  But, lately I’ve been thinking about the nook color, because after all its a pain to carry a huge pile of books when you travel.  So then I could just have my whole library at the palm of my hand. But do you think it’s worth it? Would you recomend eReaders?  And, if so, which ones? Are eBooks less expensive or more expensive than regular books?  I’ve been going to the library frequently to save money on books.  Oh and one more thing, just wondering – Do you buy your books (B&N, Borders, etc.), go to the library, or do you own an eReader?

palm

admin answers:

Hi, Muffinz!  Regular books are great indeed, but people who get an eReader generally read 3-4 times more books than before they got one.  Thus, that speaks for the devices (definitely worth the money and useful.)  There are also many advantages of eReaders – for example, you can put your favorite MP3′s on them and listen while you read.  An eReader can hold thousands of books in digital format.

When choosing the device, first decide which screen you want: e-Ink or LCD.  Your choice will depend on what you typically read.  If your reading consists of black & white novels, then the better one would be Kindle or e-Ink Nook from Barnes & Noble.  However, if you read electronic magazines or college text books with a lot of color graphs and charts or children’s books with a lot of pictures, then the better choice would be Nook Color LCD from Barnes & Noble.

You should also consider the limitations of e-Ink eReaders – they are limited to black & white, and currently, they “blink” at each ebook’s page turn.  Consequently, they’re not too good for web browsing, they need external light source for reading when dark, and they cannot handle videos.

Whichever device you choose, here’s the advantages of the Nook’s (both e-Ink black & white and Nook Color) over Kindle:

Need Palm treo help please!?

Hey!  I just got a Palm treo 650 and I wanted to know how I can get games on it. I have this game called zap but that’s it, I also have this app that downloaded on it called eReader. I wanted to know how I can get different books and I would like to know some websites to help me out with these topics. Also,  just any tips or pointers you guys can give me…I’ll take anything!  Thanks!

admin answers:

I have that phone too! Pretty awesome eh?

I got some freeware online that allowed me to download games free, just search palm treo freeware. Than, I got my own ringtone maker called Minitones.

Defniitely get a memory card for your treo, it helps you save pictures, and put music on your phone.

Be really careful to not drop it or get *ahem* sand on it. I dropped mine at the beach and I have to get a replacement phone now because I must of missed a few pieces of sand.

You can also go to preferences and change the background/color of the touchscreen. Mine is pink right now!

You can also set any picture you want in the background of the dialing pad on the phone.

Overall, It’s a REALLY durable phone. I’ve had mine forever and its only broken because of my own carelessness recently. You won’t have any problems with the phone freezing, and you can do some pretty amazing stuff with it.

Jenny asks…

How can I edit a *.pdb file in an iTouch/iPhone app folder?

Before you blatantly answer, take note that I’m not talking about Palm eReader files or anything like that. I’m talking about iPhone application files here. System files.
Anyways, I want to edit some stats for a game save.
The game is “The Quest.” ($5.99 on App Store)
After I save my game, the save file “TheQuestSave1.pdb” shows up.
The file is located here: /private/var/mobile/Applications/486AA5B9-6F48-447A-91F6-5F6F2C33E928/Documents/TheQuestSave1.pdb
Now, the question is how do I decompile/convert/edit this??
I’ve Googled forums and etc, but all I find are stupid people replying about eReader files.
ONLY reply if you know EXACTLY what I’m talking about!!!
If you can give me any documentation on the construction of iTouch/iPhone apps, then that’d be great.
I use a PC, so don’t throw me any apps that run only on Mac.
Peace!
Yes, it is an Apple-made software.
I have SSH’d it over to my desktop on the PC.
Now I want to edit it.
Any app suggestions?
When I open it in Word Pad, I get quite a bit of unknown characters and random-looking code.
Is this because it’s binary?

palm

admin answers:

a PDB file is a program database file. Basically it contains the “coded” version of the application in objective c.
I am a member of the msdn network so I found the answer there but Im pretty sure its the same.

If you want to edit it then try to open it up in mail or find a way tos end it to your pc because there is no way to edit it directly onto the ipod or iphone itself.

PS There is a god chance that there is a different answer than what I said because I got my answer from MSDN but this is an apple device and I don’t know how the hell the do it there.

Removing Books from Sony eReaders?

Sandy asks…

How do you remove books from the Sony eReader 500 but not the library?

I recently purchased the Sony eReader PRS-505 and have almost filled up the memory. I cannot figure out how to remove the books I have read from the reader without completely deleting them from my list. I am used to the iPod interface where you can just un-check the song in the library and it will remove it from the iPod playlists. Any suggestions?

sony ereader

admin answers:

Huh, I just fired it up and apparently they removed that function. It used to be more iTunes-like.

The best way I can think of is to create collections. To create a “collection”, use the large “+” symbol on the bottom-left of the window. Call one “Keep” or whatever you want. Move the books you do want in to the “Keep”. Be sure to remove what you don’t want from that collection, it should still be in your main “Library”.

Under the “Sync” sub-head under your reader, uncheck “Books” and but keep the collections you want checked. This should remove them from your ebook but not your library.

I just did this actually.

Sandra asks…

How do you find the dictionary on the Sony eReader Touch Edition?

How to delete all collections from my Sony Ereader?

I have a Sony EReader 600 touch. I went and deleted all my books, but I can’t delete the collection folders. So even though I have no books in them, I can’t delete the collection folder. Is there a way to do this?

Laura asks…

how do I take borrowed books from the library and sync them to my sony Ereader pocket edition?

I just got a sony ereader as a present, I have gone to two libraries and they said “oh yeah, totally easy because it works with Adobe.” Well now I have six borrowed books in adobe but have no idea how to transfer them into the sony reader library to then be synced to my reader.

I tried to just sync from Adobe, but I didn’t find anything close to a sync function.

sony ereader

admin answers:

I have a Sony e-reader pocket and had to download the e-library program from the Sony site to be able to put anything on my reader. . After you download the program and go through the instructions, just save your adobe files to the software, then plug in your reader and transfer the files. I’ve only downloaded e-pub files to my reader from Google books, so it is only theoretical if this will work the same way. You could also contact Sony customer support and they may be more help.

Robert asks…

Which websites allow you to purchase ebooks for the Sony Ereader?

I am aware of the sony ebook store, ReadStore, but I can’t find any other ones that will allow ebooks for the sony ereader. Thanks so much!

sony ereader

admin answers:

On a Sony Reader you can read PDF and Adobe Digital Editions epub, in some models you can even read TXT. If you are trying to buy books at B&N, Apple or Amazon, you will not be able to read them using a Sony as those stores in particular either use a different format (Amazon, with Kindle), or have exclusive proprietary DRM that blocks their books from being read in certain competitive devices (i.e. Barnes and Noble Nook or Apple, which both read the formats, but not if they have DRM from Sony). That being said you can buy books even from the Kobo ebook store and read them in your Sony. In addition, you can read non DRM ebooks using your Sony as long as they are in the mentioned formats.

Some ebook stores I have used:

Diesel eBooks – http://www.diesel-ebooks.com/

Fictionwise – http://www.fictionwise.com/

Kobo – http://www.kobobooks.com/lists/New_Releases/4slNPERSxU6UXGhwaM1PGw-1.html

Microsoft Reader Software

George asks…

Can you download the Microsoft Reader or eReader to the iPhone or only to the Amazon Kindle?

What other multifunctional devices out there have eReader capabilities?

microsoft reader

admin answers:

Yes, you can download an application to the iPhone and read Kindle books.  Here is an article talking about this:

http://theappleblog.com/2009/03/04/first-look-amazon-kindle-for-iphone/

However, when using the iPhone to read Kindle books, there are quite a lot of people complaining about the small screen size, discomfort for long reading, no wireless access and no access to the Kindle store for instant download of books and newspapers, etc., when compared to the Kindle. If you only use the device for reading occasionally then it should be fine. But if you’ll use it for reading often then it is the best bet to buy the Kindle. You’ll definitely feel a big difference on the reading experience. There is a good review here talking about the difference too:

Hope it helps.

Question for Kindle or other eReader Owners?

I want to buy one of these eReaders and the only reason I want one is to copy and paste a part of a book from the eReader to a Microsoft Word or Notepad. Could you please tell me if that is possible? You will pick the best answer.

Thanks,

Please read the question and answer exactly about my questions. I don’t want to know the benefit or the great things about Kindle. First answer is talking about something that I didn’t ask for.

admin answers:

Kindle is definitely an amazing device. Its worth the money. You can put ebooks/notes/audio books on your kindle also Notes and annotations are very easy to make.Very easy to use with the PC and the Mac Kindle is very straight forward there’s no need for additional software required for Kindle. Also supports you can also increase the text size which is again amazing.E-INK screen technology that don’t glare in any light so no strain to eyes and less harmful. There are wide range of books on kindle many are free and other are cheaper at price than the actual books so yes I have saved a lot of money till now.
You dont have to carry now all those heavy actual books, kindle is so light weight which is carrying almost 1500 books within it. Since I travel a lot I really like the 3G Internet you can get the internet wherever you go. Whenever you are tired of reading you can also you Text-To-Speech with auto-page turning feature which is jst so relaxing. If the small size strains your eyes a lot than can also change the text-size. I must say Kindle is a small magic books really I cant live without it.

Kindle Ereader – can I upload works files?

My son wants a Kindle for Christmas but I want to make sure he can use it for the books he likes. He likes reading fan fiction from the site fanfiction.net. How would I go about uploading it to the Kindle and it there any cost? I was just thinking of copying it to Microsoft works and trying to upload it from there.

Thank-you

The easiest thing would probably be to just go to the site from the Kindle browser. If that content can be downloaded to your computer, you’d probably have to convert it to a Kindle format or if it’s already compatible, you’d just copy it to the Kindle via the included USB cable.

How to read ebooks in word?

Nook Color from Barnes & Noble is what you need.
Get Nook Color from bn.com or any Barnes & Noble physical store or BestBuy or Walmart. There’s over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available through Barnes & Noble eBook store. Prices are generally much lower than for physical books.
- Nook allows to lend books for 2 weeks to friends or to your other devices that run B&N app. Barnes & Noble allows (when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store) to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
- Nook Color is better as a color e-Reader than Kindle simply because it has color and Kindle is black and white. Content that greatly benefits from color – such as kids books and magazines – looks much better and sharper on Nook Color’s screen.
- Nook Color is better as an e-Reader in general than iPad. It has a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight than iPad’s. Also, as it’s smaller in size than iPad, the text appears sharper on Nook’s screen. Also it has 12,000 (more soon) kids books that are built as a game with feedback.
- Nook Color has been picked as the editors choice by PC Magazine while pro reviewers of other sites (CNET, ZDNet, Engadget, AllThingsDigital, etc.) mentioned that it tested to be pretty fast for apps and PDF’s, and has a beautiful screen.
- Overall, Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It’s a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn’t have a camera. If all you want is to read novels, Kindle (or the original e-Ink Nook) might be better for you. If you want something more from your device at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.

Do I Need a Screen Protector for my eReader?

Amazon Kindle

A Screen Protector for my eReader:

Since my Amazon Kindle is now one of my most prized possessions, one of the first accessories that I bought was a clear screen protector for my eReader to keep the screen from getting scratched.  I figured it would be similar to the screen protector I keep on my Blackberry phone, and wouldn’t interfere with my reading experience any more than the one for my phone interferes with my making calls….

The first thing I noticed with the screen protectors for my eReader, when the 3 pack arrived, was that they were GLOSSY…not a good choice for covering the screen of something that you’ll be looking at in bright light, direct sunlight, even in dimmer light.  The glossy clear plastic actually takes away from the carefully crafted screen of the Kindle.  Still, I wanted to protect the screen on my eReader…so I took the first one out of the three pack that I ordered and proceeded to put it on the screen.

The protector fits the screen perfectly, and it was double sided so that I could peel off the top cover once the bottom was firmly seated….the only problem that I had was that the top cover would not peel off as easily as it looked in the directions…I ended up peeling off the cover tab, but not the cover itself.  When I tried that, the whole thing came off and I ended up trashing cover number 1.

The second eReader screen protector went on a little easier and I managed to get the top cover off easily…however, under the cover were all these little pockets of air!  Now, they give you a little “tool” to remove these air bubbles, but I have to tell you, when I started using that little tool on my Amazon Kindle, the Kindle started acting really weird…waking up, restarting itself, and more!

Finally, I get a few of the air bubbles out, and I sit down to read…  NOT GOOD!  The glossy screen protector that I bought for my eReader, coupled with a few remaining air bubbles, literally RUINED my reading experience.  Even worse, when I tried to get the cover off…I had a horrible time removing it and was really worried that I would ruin my Kindle

Conclusion About a Screen Protector for my eReader:

I threw the third screen protector for my eReader away unused and ordered a nice leather cover.  Now, when I read, I just open the cover of my ereader and read through the screen as Amazon intended it to look in the first place.  Perhaps you might like a screen protector for your ereader…that is if you are more talented at putting the screen protector on your eReader than I was at putting a screen protector on my eReader!
