Is It Hard to Download Books to an eReader?

Is it Hard to Download Books to an eReader?

Amazon Kindle eReaderSo, you’re not the most technologically inclined person, but still think you might like to have an eReader?  But, you’re wondering just how hard it is to download eBooks to an eReader, and just exactly what you’d need to do that.  First of all, relax!  Even the biggest technophobe can handle this one!

There are three different ways to download your favorite books to any eReader on the market:

Plug in to Your Computer via USB Cable:  Nearly every electronic reader on the market comes with a USB cable that conveniently plugs into both your eReader and any computer with an internet connection. Once you’re plugged in, it’s just a simple matter of navigating to the menu selection on your eReader that connects you to the eBook store for your eReader, or with some eReaders, whichever eBook store you prefer.

WIFI:  WIFI refers to a wireless internet connection and does not require a USB cable that is connected to a computer.  Most homes with more than one computer already have a wireless network with a high speed internet connection, as well as dozens of other places, like coffee shops, bookstores, restaurants, hotels, libraries, and more.  Connecting your eReader to a wireless network is, again, as easy as locating the “Turn Wireless On/Off” setting on your eReader and ensuring that it’s on.  From there, you simply select the option to either surf the internet to go to your favorite bookstore, or select the one that automatically connects you to your preferred eBookstore.

3G:  3G refers to a built in cellular internet connection that works just like your smartphone, automatically connecting to your eBookstore, the internet, your email, and more, depending upon the eReader that you purchase.  Most eReaders, like the Amazon Kindle, offer the 3G connection for free, however, if your eReader is also a tablet computer, your 3G connection may be part of a service package that’s required to use the 3G service.

If you travel frequently, and often find yourself sitting in airports, hotel rooms, and other areas without an Internet connection, an eReader with 3G is almost a necessity for you. And, if you’re the type that is technologically-impaired, an eReader with 3G makes purchasing your ebooks easy for you because you don’t need a computer!

So, go ahead, order your eReader and start downloading your favorite books!

Best eReaders for Comic Books & Novels

Betty asks…

Best ereader for comic books?

I know there are a ton of different e-readers out now that can do tons of different things. In all honesty I just want a color screen that I can read my digital comic books on. ipads and some of the other tablet pc’s are nice but downloading apps and other internet related content isn’t a big deal to me. Any help would be appreciated

admin answers:

Part of that is going to depend on where you buy the digital comic books. NookColor is pretty impressive but only if the books are available in a supported format either with no DRM or a DRM scheme that is supported by the device. Velocity Micro Cruz is less expensive than NookColor and it’s nice for use as a reader. Like NookColor, it’s linked to a particular store via wi-fi but you can copy to it from the computer, and both are obviously somewhat lacking in terms of being fully-function tablets but then they don’t cost what the iPad costs. Neither has 3G, by the way. There’s also the Pandigital Novel but I’ve played with the in-store demos and I don’t think it’s worthwhile compared to Cruz and NookColor. There is talk of color e-ink finally coming during the early part of 2011, just so you know.

George asks…

What is the best Ereader for reading ebooks? Nook? Kindle? Ipad?

admin answers:

Hi, Jake S, Nook from Barnes & Noble is the best combination of price and features of the eReaders market. When choosing an eReader, you need to consider not only the physical properties of the device, but also compare eBook stores behind it. Sony has never been a contender for any comparison by anyone as they only have like 5 books in their Ebook store and their devices are way overpriced for what they offer. Borders is behind Kobo/Cruz devices in US and as you might of heard, Borders is on a brink of bankruptcy. Kindle and Nook are the only devices to be considered as their eBook stores have over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available.
Having that out of the way, you should then decide which screen you want: e-Ink or LCD. It depends on what you’re reading. If just black & white novels then the better one would be Amazon Kindle
or e-Ink Nook from Barnes & Noble. If you read electronic magazines or college text books with a lot of color graphs and charts or children’s’ books with a lot of pictures then the better would be Nook Color LCD from Barnes & Noble. Then, you should understand the limitations of e-Ink eReaders – they are limited to be black & white for now they “blink” at each ebook’s page turn, they’re not too good for web browsing, they need external light source for reading when dark, and they cannot handle videos.
Whichever device you choose, here’s the advantages of the Nook’s (both e-Ink black & white and Nook Color) over Kindle:
- Any Barnes & Noble store provides free Wi-Fi to Nook’s
- Nook allows to lend Nook books for two weeks to friends and family or share with your other devices that run B&N app (PC, MAC, Android phones, Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad, etc.) Barnes & Noble allows (when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store) to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for renting text-ebooks.
Nook Color is worth mentioning separately as this is a hybrid Android eReader/tablet device, something between Kindle and iPad. Even though Nook Color has LCD touchscreen, it’s a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight and produces less glare all of which are dooming reading on iPad. Also, the screen is amazing and readable/viewable at wide angles.
Overall, Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It’s a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn’t have a camera. If all you want is to read novels, the original e-Ink Nook might be better for you. If you want something more from your device (color graphs and charts of college text books, childrens books, photos and videos, web sites in full color) at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet.
Nook Color has several apps that already come with the device (Pandora Internet radio, QuickOffice, etc.) Also, Barnes & Noble recently released Nook SDK and Nook Developer platform that will allow most of the existing 100,000 Android apps be ported to it. Also, you can use the Social Settings screen to link your NOOK Color to your Facebook account and your Twitter account. You can also import all your contacts from your Google Gmail account. Once you have linked to Facebook and Twitter and set up email contacts, you can lend and borrow books, recommend books, and share favorite quotes with your friends.

Carol asks…

What is the best ereader? The Nook, Kindle?

admin answers:

In short:

> Don’t go for Nook Color. It’s using backlight screen like computer screen, and is difficult to our eyes. Just not suitable for reading purpose.

> Choose the Nook if you want to be:
- Able to borrow ebooks from library to your ebook reader
- Able to read books in epub format (without need of conversion) on your ebook reader

> Choose the Amazon Kindle
if you want to be:
- Able to have free 3G wireless access
- Able to download books and use 3G wireless even you’re outside of the United States
- Able to have text-to-speech function to read books to you like audio books

There is also quite a good review for comparison between the two here:

Michael asks…

what is the best ereader for kids?

admin answers:

Hi Shannon Stephenson,
get the V.Reader Animated E-Book System
* 4.3″ color touch screen
* Plays fully animated stories with story narration, character voices, vivid graphics and exciting music and sounds
* Includes 3 ways to play: Watch the story, reading games and story dictionary
* USB port and SD memory card slot for expansion
* Durable, kid-tough design

James asks…

Whats the best ereader out there?

admin answers:

In short, I won’t choose iPad or Nook Color, because they’re using backlight screen like computer screen, and is difficult to our eyes. Just not suitable for reading purpose. For other ebook readers including the B&N Nook, Sony Reader, and Amazon Kindle, I’ll go for the Kindle. For the Sony Reader, many books (especially new releases) cannot be easily find on it. For the Nook, it is good but it is slower and less user friendly compared to the new version of Amazon Kindle
.

Digital Reader Books

Sharon asks…

Is Sonys Reader digital book puppy(linux) compatible?

I’m referring to the non touch screen one.  Currently all my computers are broken, except for my one running puppy. Can the reader digital book get book downloads from this computer?

admin answers:

I’m not intimately familiar with this device, but from what I have read, it should be detected as a Flash drive in Linux. As long as you know how to transfer files to it manually, it should work. There are programs available to manage it better in Linux, but I highly doubt anyone has built a package for Puppy yet.

Mark asks…

Is there a digital book reader that can be sold to OUTSIDE the US customers?

Kindle or sony are not sold outside the US :(

admin answers:

Actually, they are both sold outside the US.  Between the two, I’ll say the Kindle instead of Sony Reader.

I own the Kindle and I enjoy it alot. It is better than Sony Reader because Amazon provides good content support, and the number of books available in Kindle format has kept on increasing (right now there are over 800,000 Kindle books). Sony Reader, however, many users complain that it is difficult to find suitable books, and books on it are more expensive than the Kindle. Other benefits of the Kindle over Sony Reader include the free wireless internet access, and the text-to-speech function.

If you need to read PDF with charts and graphics, you may want to go for the Kindle DX, as the screen size is more suited to reading PDF’s.

William asks…

Is there a way to get free ebooks for any sort of digital reader (like the Kindle, for example)?

Like a website or something? But one that has a wide variety of books to download.

admin answers:

There are a few LEGAL sites you can get free ebooks, or read books online.

1. For the “classics”, and other older books, there are quite a few sites you can find them. Search for “public domain” ebooks. Some of the titles may surprise you, but they are all older books.

2. Some publishers, well one in particular that I can remember, offer some of their books online for free. (Link below) Often it will be the first book in a series, or part of a collection. It is a good free way to explore new authors though.
*side note. I’ve also seen a few books at the library that come with a cd containing a number of books from that publisher in .txt format (not sure if it’s the same one as the site. It was awhile ago, before ebooks became popular)

3. Amazon.com. They have a lot of ebooks you can purchase. The “free” part comes from gift cards. There are a number of sites which offer free gift cards for Amazon for your time/interest. They are usually a) Survey’s b) PTC paid to click c) “shop and earn, and d) search engine.
(if you want more information about those, you can send me a message)

4. If you don’t care about the popular titles, famous authors, or perfect editing, there are sites that get amateur writers to join and submit their work. There are a lot of people writing and not getting published, so you can find some really good stories from those sites. (And some bad…)
I can’t remember any specific sites, but they shouldn’t be hard to find.

I hope I’ve helped.

Robert asks…

Is there a cheap Digital Book Reader out there that’s good?

I wanna be able to:

And I’m looking for around $150 or under.

I think it is impossible to find a digital reader with budget under your limit and with all such functions… To have all the functions you mentioned, I think the Kindle is the best buy.

What’s a Good eBook Reader?

John asks…

Ebook reader?

What’s a good ebook reader?  I don’t want to spend $400 on one..

ebook reader

admin answers:

What do mean by ‘ebook reader’? I use Microsoft Reader for .lit files, Mobipocket, which reads most other ebook formats, and Adobe Reader for Pocket PC for pdfs.

If you mean, what’s a good PDA to read ebooks on… I’m particularly fond of my Acer. The iPaqs are fab, but you don’t need something that expensive if you’re only using it for ebooks. Acers are nice reliable little pieces of kit, and you can usually pick up an N30 or N35 for under £150 on eBay.

MS Reader comes with Windows Mobile
Mobipocket is freeware, which you can download here: http://www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/ProductDetailsReader.asp
Adobe Reader for Pocket PC is also freeware, found here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readerforppc.html

With those three you should be able to read pretty much anything.

Sandy asks…

admin answers:

Micromax Q3 doesn’t support .pdf files but if you will convert the .pdf file into .txt file then You can use ebook reader in Q3 to open your .txt file! You can copy a file by selecting it and if there are more then one file then select it by ctrl or shift and then select copy command and then paste it to the desired location!

So I am thinking about getting an ebook reader. First of all are they any good and secondly what is the best one to buy for the money?

ebook reader

admin answers:

You can consider buying Kindle from amazon they do ship to UK
It’s sure a worth buying. Wireless is a unique feature I will say and that’s make really value for money. 3G wireless and global coverage, I personally travel a lot and really worthy for me. You can have any newspaper at any place. Paper like display, 1500 books storage and list is on.I love this little magic book.

Built-In PDF Reader: Your Kindle can now display PDF documents natively. Native PDF support allows you to carry and read all of your personal and professional documents on the go.

Michael asks…

Is there an ebook reader that reads multiple formats?

I want to purchase an ebook reader. However, I have a collection of ebooks in Microsoft reader, PDF, adobe digital editions, mobipocket reader, and html formats. Is there an ebook reader that will read all of these formats or if I buy one will I then have to buy ebooks in that specific format, such as kindle only?

ebook reader

admin answers:

Yes, there are a number of ebook readers that support those formats. BeBook and EZ Readers both support over 20 formats. All ebook readers, even Kindle, support PDF, and it also supports HTML and MOBI.

Most ebook readers support ADE.

eBooks, Palm, & eReader Apps

I need help with ebooks…?

I have an eReader installed in my Palm Tungsten E2. Now I don’t know what format of ebooks my palm can read. Any advice on what kind of ebooks my palm can read?

Your manual should list what formats you can use. If not go to www. your service provider.com and check with their help section or tech department.

Richard asks…

Need help finding a book…?

I downloaded a eReader application for my Palm Treo 755P (about a year ago) and it came with 2 free books. One of the books was a sci-fi/horror novel about this team that was sent to the south pole to explore what happened to a military team that disappeared there a few months prior.

What they found was was pretty crazy and the point is, I don’t remember the name of the book and I don’t use the Palm anymore. Anyone know what the title of this book is or where I can track it down?
No, it wasn’t Lost City but it does sound interesting. Forward me the text to if you will.

It was definitely the South Pole. There were some artifacts that were found that pointed to a missing link for aboriginal indians in Australia that ended up under the south pole.

Thanks!

palm

admin answers:

Are you sure it was the south pole?  Clive Cussler’s Lost City sounds close.  They look for a team that was lost, they find a city in the ice… Very exciting. Even if that’s not the story, you may enjoy it anyway. He is one of my favorite authors.

Cheap eBook Reading Solution?

Right now, I’m in a country where any electronic gear is a bit overpriced. Without considering what might be available in my particular (undisclosed) location:

What is the cheapest eBook reading solution available?

I found a site with LOTS of free eBooks and I would like to take advantage of the English titles which are hard to find here.

I considered my phone, but have not found an ebook reader, plus the screen would be a pain to read anything long on.

The Sony book reader, and the iLiad eReader are both VERY expensive, even in the States.

What about a palm? An old model palm or other pda? One that is easy on the eyes?

All suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks for answering :)

admin answers:

Buy any Pocket PC / Windows Mobile 2002, 2003 2003SE or 2005 (WM5) device (they are pretty cheap on eBay). You can install Microsoft Pocket Reader for free – and there’s THOUSANDS of free ebooks available online. It’s a GREAT reader program – you’ll never know how you did without it. Microsoft also supply a free plug-in for Microsoft Word that allows you to create ebooks from Word documents.

Betty asks…

Can my brother’s free Augen The Book eReader books be transferred to my Kindle?

I was wondering–my brother has the Augen The Book eReader which comes with free books. He downloaded them to our computer into a file, so all of the free books are stored. Now, I have a Kindle and want those books. Can the stored books be transferred to my Kindle? If yes, how?

ebooks

admin answers:

Those free books, are they older classic type books, like Pride and Prejudice, Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Jules Verne, etc.?

If so, you can get those for free from Amazon for your Kindle.

However, if they are titles not offered for free by Amazon, you might want to try a free program called Calibre. It can convert other eBook and document formats, into a Kindle compatible format. Then you just download them to the Kindle using a USB cable.

Can I transfer my printed books to an eReader?

Im planning to buy an eReader( either Nook or Kindle), I own some books but they are not ebooks.  I just wanted to know if i can somehow transfer those books I own to my eReader so I wont have to re-purchase them… Thanks in advance!

admin answers:

You have some limited options.  You can use a scanner to scan some pages of your book and then transfer the images into your ereader. If you want the complete book, then you will have to purchase the ebook version.  There are some websites that provide you free and downloadable versions of your books, but don’t be overly optimistic that you will find your books.  Try one of these sites:

Why are some books in the eReader store Unavailable?

Hi. I got an ereader for my birthday and I bought 2 books. I have two other books I would like to buy, but when I search them under the pricing it says that these books are unavailable. Both of these books are in Indigo and have been published a couple months back. I don’t have a Kobo but have the Sony Reader. I have tried finding the answer but I can’t seem to find it. If you have any info about this it would greatly help! Thanks!

ebooks

admin answers:

Your question is a little confusing.  Where are you searching for these books? If you can’t find them in the Sony Reader Store, you can request that they stock them or you can buy somewhere else. If you are using the Borders store, I have no idea–downloading from that site is a nightmare and there is no rhyme or reason for why unavailable items are listed. You can try purchasing the book through the publisher’s website, or the author may have a link to a bookstore selling the books you want. Just remember to only purchase/download in a format your Reader can work with (I have had success with epub, BBeB, PDF and Adobe Acrobat)

Where are you located? (US, Canada or somewhere else) Because of licensing, some books are available in certain countries only. Also, I believe the Sony Reader Store only functions for the US and Canada. If you are in another country you will have to use an independent ebookstore.

What books are you looking for? If I knew the titles/author, I would be able to find an online bookstore for you if they are available at all.

Microsoft Reader Software

George asks…

Can you download the Microsoft Reader or eReader to the iPhone or only to the Amazon Kindle?

What other multifunctional devices out there have eReader capabilities?

microsoft reader

admin answers:

Yes, you can download an application to the iPhone and read Kindle books.  Here is an article talking about this:

http://theappleblog.com/2009/03/04/first-look-amazon-kindle-for-iphone/

However, when using the iPhone to read Kindle books, there are quite a lot of people complaining about the small screen size, discomfort for long reading, no wireless access and no access to the Kindle store for instant download of books and newspapers, etc., when compared to the Kindle. If you only use the device for reading occasionally then it should be fine. But if you’ll use it for reading often then it is the best bet to buy the Kindle. You’ll definitely feel a big difference on the reading experience. There is a good review here talking about the difference too:

http://www.bestereaders.net/kindle-beats-ipad/

Hope it helps.

Kindle is definitely an amazing device. Its worth the money. You can put ebooks/notes/audio books on your kindle also Notes and annotations are very easy to make.Very easy to use with the PC and the Mac Kindle is very straight forward there’s no need for additional software required for Kindle. Also supports you can also increase the text size which is again amazing.E-INK screen technology that don’t glare in any light so no strain to eyes and less harmful. There are wide range of books on kindle many are free and other are cheaper at price than the actual books so yes I have saved a lot of money till now.
You dont have to carry now all those heavy actual books, kindle is so light weight which is carrying almost 1500 books within it. Since I travel a lot I really like the 3G Internet you can get the internet wherever you go. Whenever you are tired of reading you can also you Text-To-Speech with auto-page turning feature which is jst so relaxing. If the small size strains your eyes a lot than can also change the text-size. I must say Kindle is a small magic books really I cant live without it.

Kindle Ereader – can I upload works files?

My son wants a Kindle for Christmas but I want to make sure he can use it for the books he likes. He likes reading fan fiction from the site fanfiction.net. How would I go about uploading it to the Kindle and it there any cost? I was just thinking of copying it to Microsoft works and trying to upload it from there.

admin answers:

The easiest thing would probably be to just go to the site from the Kindle browser. If that content can be downloaded to your computer, you’d probably have to convert it to a Kindle format or if it’s already compatible, you’d just copy it to the Kindle via the included USB cable.

Google Launches eBook Store!

Google has officially joined the eReader competition with the launch of an eReader app called Google eBooks and the new Google eBookstore.  Much like the Amazon Kindle app, Google is providing a platform for downloading and reading digital books.

However, Google is attempting to differentiate itself from Amazon’s Kindle reader by selling ebooks that can span a wide range of devices, including web browsers, Androids, iPhones, iPads, iPod touchs, Nook and many supported eReaders.  Unfortunately, Google does not yet support the Amazon Kindle, BlackBerry, Kobo or Windows Mobile 7.

Even better, Google eBooks has a catalog of over 3 million ebooks, many of which are being offered as free downloads.  Google’s eBook platform is, at first glance, more open than Amazon’s and Apple’s. “Our approach is really more of an open ecosystem about encouraging the adoption of books across different platforms and retailers,” said Google product management director, Scott Dougall.

Will there be a Google eReader?

The Wall Street Journal said today that Google will begin selling ebooks this summer…now, one can only ask, is a Google eReader right behind?  We think so, and we’ll let you know as soon as we can confirm or disprove this one!
