Best eReader for PDFs?

If you’re looking for the best eReader for PDF’s, you won’t need to look any further than Amazon with the release of the Kindle Fire.  Prior to the release of this multifunctional, inexpensive tablet computer, I would have recommended anything BUT a Kindle for reading PDF files.  The old interface was klunky, the documents didn’t display correctly or easily, and even I couldn’t get the conversion from PDF format to Kindle format to work!

Kindle Fire, Full Color 7That’s all changed with the release of Kindle Fire…not only is the Kindle Fire a full color eReader/tablet combination, but with the functionality to view PDF documents on the Kindle OR convert them to Amazon’s own format makes Kindle Fire even more irresistible to me!  You see, I read lots of books…books that I purchase through the Kindle store, books that I download online, and books that aren’t always formatted for my Kindle.

Of course, the ability to convert from PDF to Kindle format has been around for a while, but to be honest, it has never been an easy task…so, I pretty much gave up on reading PDF files on my Kindle and simply printed them out or read them on the computer.  Not anymore!  Kindle Fire will not only display my PDF files in color, but the conversion process has been updated, and it’s free through Amazon!

So, if you’re asking me now what the best ereader for PDF’s is, I’m telling you to preorder your Kindle Fire…today!

A Haunting at Hensley Hall

With Halloween just around the corner, ghost stories make fantastic reads, and A Haunting at Hensley Hall is exactly the kind of ghost story that fits the holiday.

A Haunting at Hensley Hall (A Ravynne Sisters Paranormal Mystery)The story is set in an old mansion that two sisters win in an unusual contest held by a small town…the previous owners committed suicide, or so it seems, and there were no heirs, so the mansion is essentially “raffled off” to pay the back taxes that have accumulated on the property.

Of course, the mansion has a dark history, and is in a serious state of disrepair, but conveniently the sisters have the money to begin fixing it up to become a bed and breakfast. Along the way, the sisters begin to discover not only the ghosts, but the reasons for their presence, and the mystery deepens…

Mix in the forty year old disappearances of one of the previous occupants, and several of her teen aged friends…and you’ve got enough suspense in parts of the book to keep you reading well into the night!

If you’re a fan of semi-gothic, lighter horror stories, you’ll find yourself drawn into Hensley Hall along with Charlie, Meg, and the curious cast of characters they meet along the way, just as I was.

Even better, A Haunting at Hensley Hall is available in the Kindle store for just $.99, and I have to say, it’s money well spent!

Why I Keep Using My Kindle

You know, the one question that people ask me most when they find out exactly how many eReaders and tablet computers I have bought, reviewed, and actually keep laying around, is why they still see me dragging my Amazon Kindle with me whenever I go somewhere, or why it’s laying around the house when I’ve been reading a book.   “Why don’t you just use your tablet to read, too?”  is the question they invariably ask…except for my techie brother-in-law, that is.

Kindle 3G, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 3G Works Globally, Graphite, 6When we recently took a family vacation to Texas, not only did I bring only my Kindle for reading, but so did he.  Of course, being the geeks that we are in my family, we discussed why neither of us brought a tablet computer, and neither of us brought a laptop…and the concensus was, simply this.  For the best reading experience, absolutely nothing beats the Amazon Kindle

Unlike tablet computers, the Kindle isn’t backlit, and you don’t accidentally hit the wrong button on the touchscreen, thereby loosing your place in the book that you’re currently reading.   The Amazon Kindle, with it’s eInk display, and manual page turning buttons on the sides, actually functions better as an eReader than any tablet computer on the market.  And, if you want to just read a book, there is no better device.

So, yes, while I use one of my tablets whenever I want to search the web, update my Facebook status, or play a quick game of scrabble on Pogo.com, when it comes to reading a book, it’s going to be a long time until I retire the one device that just feels right, looks right, and works right for reading.

Just like it took some time for many of us to consider switching from real books to the Kindle, they are going to have to retire the Kindle completely before I will switch to reading on anything else.

Peanie: Footsteps of the Father

If you like apacolypse fiction, which I do, then you’ll find Peanie: Footsteps of the Father an interesting read.  Unlike other popular books on the subject, the electromagnetic pulse doesn’t immediately wipe out the entire country, thereby leaving Peanie, the main character, time to gather his family and head towards the family “farm”, a 2400 acre spread of land that was primarily used for hunting.

At the “farm,” Peanie teaches his grown children and grandchildren the “old ways” of doing things, educating them in the ways of survival in a post electricity world.  Although he is, at times, a gruff old man, who never seemed to really care for his children, the story inevitably unfolds so that his true love for family and friends comes through.

Note:  This book is available only in Kindle format.

A Turn in the Road

count="true" href="http://www.bestereaders.net/a-turn-in-the-road/" size="standard">

The other day, I downloaded one of Debbie Macomber’s newest books, A Turn in the Road, and even though I have been a fan of her Cedar Cove series for years, this book is a refreshing change from the normal books that she writes.

The book’s main character, Bethanne, is a divorced forty-something mother, who sets out cross country with her former mother-in-law, and twenty-ish daughter, to attend the mother-in-law’s 50 year class reunion.  Along the way, the threesome find adventure at every turn, from skinny dipping in a cold lake to the casinos in Vegas, all the way to Florida for the reunion.

A Turn in the Road is a journey filled with fun, emotion, and life changing experiences for all three women…one that I am thoroughly enjoying, and that I am sure you will too!
